Abstract

The local wisdom of the Malay community in utilizing medicinal plants as a family pharmacy has been gradually eroding among the younger generation, including among children with special needs who have limited access to health education. This community service initiative aimed to enhance the understanding of medicinal plants among inclusive kids at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Puchong, Malaysia, through the concept of The Mother's Kitchen as a Family Pharmacy. The activity was designed using interactive and participatory educational methods that engaged students in direct sensory experiences to recognize kitchen herbs through five senses, observing shape and color, feeling textures, smelling aromas, and tasting medicinal kitchen herbs (ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, galangal, and garlic). Comprehension was measured through pre-test and post-test questionnaires administered with assistance, utilizing a simplified format supported by images and emoticons. The results demonstrated a 37% increase in participant understanding (from 41% to 78%), with success indicators including the ability to identify the names, physical characteristics, and basic functions of medicinal plants. This initiative confirms that a kitchen-based contextual approach is effective for medicinal plant education among children with special needs, while simultaneously contributing to the preservation of local wisdom and the achievement of the SDGs regarding quality inclusive education.
